Very impressive, I wish I had your skills. Nice bike. Looks the part.
Hey thanks. The hard part is finding bits that fit, there are literally a million different sizes and style of everything!
PS I don’t think anyone has ever wished for my skills before, Cheers!
Its a great build, I have owned one of these since 1992, its not been used for a good few years while I have been a cycle snob but just recently thinking about re commissioning it with slicks as a commute bike, seeing yours has made my mind up! Thanks for all the pics and details!
Cheers dude. It’s a good frame and they’re a good bike. They got a bit rubbish in the mid to late 90s but the late 80s/early 90s ones are good. Yours is probably one of the last good ones!
Lovely 🙂 I have a 1990 Muddy Fox I’m trying to put a pannier rack on, and like yours it has eyelets on the dropout, but nothing at the monostay (what where they thinking?) Can I ask what the mount you have around the monostay is called, and where you got it from? Cheers.
Yes, it isn’t the best set up, i guess they probably intended the eyelets for mud guards. Anyway, i modified a seat clamp intended to give you pannier mounts however the frame has its own integrated seat quick release so that’s a no go. I didn’t fancy drilling the frame so I split it in two and put a bolt through it. Let me see if i can find a photo of it…
That’s probably the best photo I have. I used this, and cut it in half at the eyelet end so it could still bolt back together. Worked a treat!

That’s great – thank you. I was considering getting some mounts welded on without drilling, but your solution is much cheaper and less hazardous to paint 🙂
I’m not sure it will work on mine as it has cantilevers, and therefore uses the cable guide, although from your picture it looks like there is clearance for the cable. One more question if that’s ok – is your monostay slightly ovalised? It looks like it might be (as is mine) – I presume that it’s not a problem? I guess that with longer bolts one could secure it around the downtube if the pannier reaches.
Don’t think it is ovalised, i think they did change it though throughout it’s life and between different models.
Aha – I think the Carradice Bagman 2 is essentially the item you created, but ready-made (and £2 more).

Awesome, good find. I’ll keep that in mind for next time!
