‘Wanderlust porn’ review #2 – The Man Who Cycled the World

markbeaumontThis twinned book and documentary probably had the highest budget of the different projects I’ve reviewed, and it showed.  The book was extremely well written and the documentary expertly put together by the BBC.  Halfway through reading the book, I discovered that Mark Beaumont, the author, was doing a talk in our local theatre about his various adventures, including the subject of this book—his world record breaking cycle around the world—so we went along to that too.

Mark is a fantastically inspiring chap.  In his documentary and book, his determination and fairly unique outlook on life make you realise what you can achieve if you really put your mind to it.  Although he is extremely fit, an experienced cyclist and ‘professional adventurer’, he comes across as a fairly down to earth sort of bloke so is easy to relate to and, as a cyclist, I really could feel his pain when he was struggling with sickness in the middle-east and could genuinely empathise when he had to tackle some beyond extreme headwinds in Australia.

If you’re after inspiration for a long distance cycle or other adventure, I would definitely recommend it.  The only thing that I disliked was the high level of sponsorship involved and the fact that he was racing across the world, which is so far removed from my own travel plans that I felt it wasn’t really comparable, so it wasn’t quite what I was looking for.  However, although there is an unavoidable focus on pace and the challenge of beating the world record, the book (and documentary) is littered with engaging human interactions, dramas and frank accounts of Mark’s own feelings and determination, without coming across as patronising or self-indulgent, unlike some other cycle adventure documentaries I’ve seen!
